Oil filter housing
2 - cover bolt
9 — filter housing sealing gasket
10 — mounting bolt
11 — oil filter housing
12 — oil pressure relay switch sensor
If the oil level indicator does not go out when the engine is running and the oil level is correct, stop the engine immediately and do not start it until the fault is corrected. If the oil pressure deviates from the required value, refer to Section Troubleshooting.
Examination
Instead of the oil filter cover for petrol engines, the service station installs a special BMW tool with a connection for a pressure gauge. Since in most cases such a tool is not available, the check is carried out using a dismantled oil pressure relay sensor.
1. Check the oil level, top up if necessary.
2. Start the engine and warm it up. The oil temperature should be about +80°C.
3. The oil pressure switch sensor "12" is located on the oil filter housing "11". Unscrew the bolt "2" and remove the oil filter cover so that the oil from the filter drains into the engine. There is another version of the oil filter with a screw cap. Unscrew the filter cover and remove it, refer to Section Changing engine oil and oil filter.
4. Disconnect the cable from the pressure relay sensor and unscrew the sensor.
5. Instead of the oil pressure relay sensor, screw in the appropriate pressure gauge.
6. Secure the oil filter cover.
7. Start the engine and let it idle until the indicator lamp goes out. The pressure value is given in the Specifications.
8. Increase engine speed. Check oil pressure at 5000 rpm.
9. Unscrew the filter cover and remove it to allow the oil to drain into the engine.
10. Insert the oil pressure sensor with the sealing ring and tighten to a torque of 20 N·m. Connect the connector and secure it.
11. Replace the sealing rings on the oil filter cover and the central pipe. Tighten the cover to the oil filter housing with a torque of 25 N·m, refer to Section Changing engine oil and oil filter.
