Oil filter housing
2 - cover bolt
9 - sealing gasket of the filter housing
10 - fastening bolt
11 - oil filter housing
12 - sensor-switch of the oil pressure switch
If the oil level warning light does not go out when the engine is running and the oil level is correct, stop the engine immediately and do not start it until the problem is corrected. If the oil pressure deviates from the required value, refer to Section Troubleshooting.
Examination
Service stations replace the oil filter cap on petrol engines with a special BMW tool with a pressure gauge connection. Since in most cases such a tool is not available, the check is carried out using the dismantled oil pressure switch sensor.
1. Check the oil level, top up if necessary.
2. Start the engine and warm it up. The oil temperature should be around +80°C.
3. The oil pressure switch sender -12- is located on the oil filter housing -11-. Unscrew the bolt -2- and remove the oil filter cover so that the oil from the filter drains into the engine. There is another version of the oil filter with a screw cap. Unscrew the filter cover and remove it, refer to Section Changing the engine oil and oil filter.
4. Disconnect the cable from the pressure switch sensor and unscrew the sensor.
5. Instead of the oil pressure switch sensor, screw in the appropriate pressure gauge.
6. Attach the oil filter cover.
7. Start the engine and let it idle until the control lamp goes out. The pressure value is given in the Specifications.
8. Increase engine speed. Check oil pressure at 5000 rpm.
9. Unscrew the filter cap and remove it to allow the oil to drain into the engine.
10. Insert the oil pressure sensor with a sealing ring and secure with a torque of 20 Nm. Plug in the connector and secure it.
11. Replace O-rings on oil filter cap and center pipe. Fix the cover on the oil filter housing with a torque of 25 Nm, refer to Section Changing the engine oil and oil filter.
