Removal and installation the vacuum pump (model 320d) (BMW 3 Series E46)
Since a diesel engine does not have a vacuum when sucking in air, the vacuum for the brake booster is created by a vacuum pump. The vacuum pump is mounted at the front of the cylinder head and is connected to the exhaust camshaft by a splined connection.
1. Remove the EGR radiator.
2. Remove the vacuum hose from the vacuum pump pipe by loosening the clamp.
3. Unscrew bolts "2" and "3" and remove the vacuum pump.
1. Replace the sealing ring on the vacuum pump.
2. Insert the vacuum pump with the driver into the groove of the camshaft.
3. Since the threads of the bolts "2" must be sealed, the threads of the new bolts are coated. After each unscrewing, the bolt must either be replaced or cleaned and coated with a normal sealant, such as, "Drei Bond 1209" or "Loctite Ultra Black". Tighten bolts "2" and "3" to 20 Nm.
4. Install the recirculation system radiator, refer to Section Removal and installation the intake manifold.
