Removal, installation and adjustment of the throttle actuator (BMW 3 Series E46)

Table of contents: Removal ↓ Installation ↓ Adjustment ↓
The gas drive is very sensitive to bending. Therefore, it is necessary to handle it very carefully during installation. A bend can subsequently lead to a break in the cable. Therefore, cables with bends should not be installed.

In cars with automatic speed control "Tempostat" the throttle lever has an additional gas drive. If necessary, it is disconnected in the same way as the regular gas drive.

The 320d diesel engine does not have a throttle actuator. The position of the accelerator pedal is transmitted to the control system via a pedal sensor.

Removal

Removal

1. Models 316i, 318i: Loosen the mounting screws "1" on the throttle element and remove the cover "2".

2. Give the gas to the throttle lever (arrow on the illustration), to relieve the gas thrust.

3. Squeeze the plastic clip on the strips "1", remove it from the hole in the throttle lever and remove it from the rod "2".

4. Remove the rod through the slot on the lever.

4. Remove the rod through the slot on the lever.

5. Remove the casing with the adjusting screw "1" back from the rubber bushing "2" on the support. Remove the rubber bushing from the support to the side.

Installation

6. Insert the rubber bushing into the support.

7. Place the plastic clamp over the rod.

8. Give the throttle lever a little gas. Insert the cable through the slot and secure it with the plastic clip.

9. Check the throttle adjustment and adjust if necessary.

10. Models 316i, 318i: Secure the cover to the throttle body assembly.

Adjustment

11. The throttle lever should be against the idle stop and the throttle linkage should be slightly taut. If necessary, turn the adjusting screw "1" on the support so that the linkage is taut.

12. After this, screw in the adjusting screw "1" by 1/4 turn. Now the rod has a small play. By pulling the rod casing, you can determine the play. The play should not exceed 3 mm, after which the throttle lever should begin to move.

13. Ask your assistant to fully depress the gas pedal. The throttle lever should be at the maximum gas position. Otherwise, the gas rod should be slightly tightened.

The service station checks the full throttle position by connecting a diagnostic tool that checks the throttle opening angle via the throttle potentiometer readings.

14. Cars with AT: Drive the car and check the operation of the kick-down device. If the AT does not switch to a low gear when full throttle is applied, you must contact a service station to adjust the gas drive.
