Dashboard Components — Removal and Installation (BMW 3 Series E46)

Since most of the sensors and systems in the BMW 3 Series are connected via a system data bus, the instrument cluster is the information centre. The K-bus connects the external and internal lighting, rain sensor, air conditioning/heating system and the vehicle's electrical system. The CAN-bus connects the engine management system, transmission management system and the ABS/traction control/dynamic stabilisation system. The D-bus is connected to the system diagnostic socket and to the European standard diagnostic socket (EODB).

The speedometer shows the vehicle speed obtained from the ABS readings from the rear left wheel sensor.

At the time this Manual was written, there was no information available on the possibility of replacing individual components of the instrument panel, i.e. the instrument panel must be replaced as a single sealed unit. If any of the components of the instrument panel fails, remove the instrument panel (see paragraph 9) and contact your BMW dealer to have it checked. For this purpose, BMW has a special tester that allows you to detect the faulty unit and also make the best decision to eliminate the fault.
