Withdrawal
1. Two fuel level sensors are installed in the fuel tank - on the left and on the right side of the tank. The fuel pump is combined with the right level sensor. At the time of this writing, the pump, together with the right sensor, can only be replaced as an assembly, as a single unit.

2. Before removing the sensor with the pump, completely empty the tank. Since there is no drain plug in the tank, it is advisable to start repair work when almost all the fuel has been used up from the tank.
3. Remove the rear seat.
4. To access the tank hatch, fold back the rubber mat.
5. Turn away four nuts and remove the hatch (fig 9.5).
6. Pull out the retainer and disconnect the electrical connector. Cut the clamp and disconnect the hose (pic. 9.6). Get ready for fuel to flow from the hose.
7. Turn away a ring of fastening of knot of the pump with the level sensor. There is a BMW 16 1 020 tool for unscrewing, although a completely acceptable substitute can be made (pic. 9.7). Rotate the ring counterclockwise as you would a normal nut.
8. Gently pull the pump/sensor assembly out of the tank opening. Do not bend the sensor arm. If necessary, the fuel damper can be detached from the unit for cleaning (pic. 9.8, a, b), but no other disassembly is recommended.
Left sensor
9. Removing the left sensor is similar to removing the right one. Raise the assembly and disconnect from it the hose going to the expansion tank, for which press the latch (pic. 9.9).
Installation
10. Installation is carried out in sequence. the reverse of the withdrawal, taking into account the following remarks.
- A) Replace o-rings.
- b) In order for the assembly to pass through the opening in the tank, press the float lever against the fuel damper.
- V) Rotate the assembly in the tank opening so that the installation lug of the assembly fits into the corresponding cutout in the tank opening (pic. 9.10).
- G) Use new hose clamps to secure the hoses.
