The order of operation of the cylinders:

- «525» And «528»: 1-5-3-6-2-4.

The battery is located in the front left side of the engine compartment. The negative terminal of the battery is connected to the vehicle ground.

By BMW «5281» Bosch ignition coil was used, catalog Ne 0 221 122 010 type KW 12 V.
Primary winding resistance, Ohm: 0.4.
Additional resistance Bosch, Ohm: 0.4-0.6.
From model year 1980 on «525» used ignition coil kit model «525i».
On «518» a Bosch ignition coil was installed, catalog number 0 221 119 035.
The resistance of the primary winding. Ohm: 2.9-3.4.
Additional resistance remained unchanged.
From model year 1981 on «518» a Bosch ignition coil was installed, catalog number 0 221 112 319.
The resistance of the primary winding. Ohm: 0.82.
From model year 1982, all models were equipped with a Bosch ignition coil, catalog number 0 221 122 319 (see above).
Transistor ignition switch TSZ
Brand and catalog Nb: Bosch 0 227 100 008.

Operating voltage, V: 6-15.
When working on a transistor ignition system, be sure to turn off the ignition.
Warning. Do not use ignition coils designed for transistorized ignition systems (TSZ) and contact ignition systems.
Ignition coils for contact ignition systems have No. 0 221 119 016 according to the Bosch catalog, for transistor ignition systems - 0 221 122 607.
If the ignition coils are mixed up, the breaker contacts can quickly burn out, which can cause ignition failures and difficult cold starting of the engine.
From model year 1980 on BMW «525», «528i» And «535i» Bosch transistor ignition system was installed, catalog number 0 227 100 025.
From model year 1981 on «518» and from model year 1982 on all models of the BMW 5 Series, a TSZ Bosch transistorized ignition system was installed, catalog number 0 227 100 111.

The ignition timing is set by the coincidence of the marks on the cover of the timing mechanism drive and on the crankshaft pulley. In addition, there is a mark or a steel ball with a diameter of 4 mm (pressed into the flywheel) to set the ignition timing using a stroboscope. The mark on the flywheel is visible through the hole in the clutch housing.
