Removal, installation and adjustment of the door (BMW 5 Series E28)

Removal

1. Remove the door trim panel (see section Removal and installation the interior door trim panel). Disconnect all electrical connectors and push them through the door opening so that they do not interfere with the door removal.

2. Support the door with a jack on wheels or an axle support; you can ask an assistant to support the door while you loosen the hinge bolts.

When using a jack or stand, place a rag under the door to protect painted surfaces.

3. Trace around the door hinges with a marker or scriber.



4. Disconnect the door control hinge by prying the retaining ring off the end of the pin, then pull the pin out. Some models have a cylindrical pin; it is extracted using a beard with a thin tip.



5. Loosen the nuts securing the hinges to the door and carefully remove the door from the hinges.

Installation and adjustment

1. Install in reverse order.

2. After installing the door, check how level it is and, if necessary, adjust it in the following order:

• Vertical and horizontal adjustment is made after loosening the nuts securing the hinges to the body by moving the doors as necessary.
• The door lock striker can also be adjusted both vertically and horizontally to ensure secure engagement with the lock mechanism. To do this, the mounting bolts are loosened and the striker is moved as needed.
