Removal and installation the air conditioning condenser (BMW 5 Series E28)

            0

Table of contents: Removal ↓ Installation ↓
Since working on the system is potentially dangerous, we strongly recommend that all work on the air conditioning system be performed by a BMW dealer or air conditioning specialist. At the very least, do not remove any components of the system (hoses, compressor, nipple connections, etc.) until the system is completely discharged by a qualified technician. Read the precautions at the beginning of Section Air Conditioner Maintenance and Precautions.

When installing a new capacitor, the battery/dehydrator should also be replaced (see section Removal and installation the air conditioning battery/dehydrator).

Removal

1. Discharge the air conditioning system (see warning above).

2. Remove the radiator (see section Removal and installation the radiator) on all models except E34 models. On the latter, remove the front bumper (see chapter Body).

3. Remove the radiator grille (see chapter Body).

4. Unbolt the auxiliary fan from the condenser mounting brackets.

5. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the condenser.

6. Remove the mounting bolts from the condenser brackets.

7. Remove the condenser from the vehicle and plug any open fittings to prevent dirt and moisture from entering.

8. If you are going to reinstall the same capacitor, place it on a shelf with the union nut facing up to prevent oil from leaking out.

Installation

1. Install all components in the reverse order of removal. Do not forget to install rubber gaskets under the condenser.

2. Have the system drained, recharged and leak tested by the same qualified person who discharged it.
