Removal and installation the windshield wiper drive/cowl cover (BMW 5 Series E39)
Removal
Mark the position of the wipers on the windshield using adhesive tape. To do this, stick a strip of adhesive tape to the glass directly next to the wiper.

Remove the protective caps from the mounting nuts or pry them off using a small screwdriver.

Loosen the nuts.

On the passenger side next to the driver, remove both wiper arm rockers.
Caution: Do not bend the rocker arms. Risk of breakage! Remove the rocker arms from the support using a suitable puller, such as BMW-616000.
Remove the left wiper arm cover by moving it upwards.
Unscrew the nut at the support and remove the lever by moving it upwards.

Remove the adjusting washer from the lever support. The washer sits very tightly, to remove it you need a suitable puller, for example BMW-616000, see figure W-6050.
Remove the rubber seal from the front wall with an upward movement.

Loosen clamps "2" on air ducts "1" on the left and right. Turn the air ducts toward the center of the car, release them from the bayonet mount there and remove.
Remove the replaceable element of the fine air filter "3" on the left and right, see page 202.

Pull out the wire clip "4" from the side, unfasten the filter housing "3" from the back and remove it.
Remove the fairing cover. To do this, release the 8 spacer clamps in the following sequence: unscrew the spacer pins with a screwdriver and press the clamps.
Unscrew the cover of the windshield wiper drive mounting.

Remove the wire cover after turning all the rotary levers approximately 90°.
Unfasten and disconnect the multi-pin connector plug. To do this, slide the locking latch down, causing the plug to come off the pins.
Unscrew 5 mounting bolts and remove the windshield wiper drive (console).
Installation

Attach the windshield wiper drive and tighten the mounting bolts firmly by hand. At the same time, align the drive without subjecting it to stress.
Tighten the drive mounting bolts in sequence from 1 to 5 to a torque of 10 Nm.
Press the multi-pin plug, move the clamp to the side and thus push the plug onto the contact pins.
Place the wire cover on and secure it by turning the four rotary levers.
Screw on the windshield wiper drive cover.
Place the fairing cover on, press the expansion clamps and screw in the plastic expansion screws.
Hang the fine air filter housing and secure with wire clamps.
Install fine air filters glory and right.
Insert the air duct into the bayonet mount and secure it by turning it outward. At the end of the turning movement, first insert the air duct under the fine air filter and then secure it with a clamp. Move the air duct in different directions and make sure it is securely fastened. Install the second air duct in a similar manner.
Place the rubber seal on the front of the machine.
Place the adjusting washer on the support of the left windshield wiper arm. Place the arm and align it relative to the windshield in accordance with the marks applied before removal. Make sure that the installation angle of the windshield wiper blade relative to the window glass is approximately 90°, otherwise, reposition the arm on the adjusting washer. Tighten the arm and adjusting washer to a torque of 40 Nm.
Secure the left wiper arm cover.
Install both rocker arms of the right windshield wiper arm.
Tighten the fastening nuts to a torque of 25 Nm, and after approximately 15 minutes tighten again to a torque of 25 Nm.
Install protective caps on the mounting nuts.
