Suspension arm — removal and installation (BMW 7 Series E32)

Removal



Mark the position of the front wheels relative to the hubs so that you can later install the balanced wheels in their original positions. Loosen the wheel bolts with the car on the ground. Support the car from the front and remove the front wheels.

Remove the lower mudguard (engine casing).

Loosen the mounting nuts (arrows) and remove the suspension arm from the cross beam.

Loosen the mounting nuts (arrows) and remove the suspension arm from the cross beam.


Use a puller to disconnect the steering knuckle from the steering support.

Installation



Clean the steering knuckle journal and the bore in the steering knuckle.

Insert the steering knuckle, place the washer (3), tighten the new self-locking nut (2) and tighten it to a torque of 80 Nm.

Install the suspension arm onto the cross member, tighten the nut (1), but do not tighten it.

Install the front wheels according to the marks made earlier. Do not lubricate the wheel bolts. Lower the car, tighten the wheel bolts crosswise to 100 Nm.

Place the vehicle in the working position. To do this, you must fulfill the following conditions:
  • The car stands on wheels.
  • The front seats are in the middle position.
  • Each front seat can carry 68 kg of cargo.
  • There is a 68 kg load in the middle of the rear seat.
  • In the center of the trunk there is a load weighing 21 kg.
  • The fuel tank is full of fuel.

Tighten the suspension arm mounting nuts to the crossmember to the following torques:


  • 6-cylinder engines - 81 Nm,
  • 8/12-cylinder engines - 77.5 Nm.

Install the lower engine cover (mudguard).
