Removal and installation cylinder heads (BMW 7 Series E38)

Left cylinder head



1. Remove the upper part of the rear timing chain cover (see section Removal and installation timing chain covers).

2. Remove the crankcase guard and heat shields from the front axle beam on the left and right.

3. Drain the engine cooling system by unscrewing the corresponding plug on the left side of the cylinder block.

4. Remove the spark plugs (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance).

5. Remove the engine cooling system manifold.

6. Disconnect the connectors.

7. Loosen the clamps of the electrical harness (1) and the coolant hose (2). Disconnect the hose.

8. Remove the heater valve block assembly from the holder.



9. Remove the right exhaust manifold of cylinder block No.1-6 and the left exhaust manifold of cylinder block No.7-12 (see section Removal and installation of exhaust manifolds).

10. Remove the cylinder head mounting bolts in the reverse order to that shown on illustrations.

11. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block from any remaining sealing materials.

Prevent dirt from entering the lubrication and cooling system channels.

12. Install new gasket and tighten new cylinder head mounting bolts with the required force in the specified sequence.

13. Further installation is carried out in reverse order.

Right cylinder head



1. Remove the engine oil dipstick guide.

2. Remove the right exhaust manifold of cylinder block No.1-6 and the left exhaust manifold of cylinder block No.7-12 (see section Removal and installation of exhaust manifolds).

3. Follow the steps in paragraphs 10 through 13.
