Replacing crankshaft seals and distributor seals (BMW 7 Series E38)

Replacing the crankshaft seals of the M73 engine is carried out in the same way as replacing the seals of the M60 engine (see section Replacing crankshaft seals).


1. When replacing the right distributor housing seal, remove the one-way valve on the side of cylinders No.1-6.

2. Remove the air cleaner housing (see section Removal and installation the air cleaner housing Chapters Fuel and exhaust systems).

3. Release the distributor protective cover from the clips.

9. Clean the mating surfaces of the distributor housing and timing chain cover, install new gasket with a sealing strip to the ignition distributor housing.

10. Connect the seal with tool No.11 3 200, complete with tool No.00 5 500.

12. Further installation is carried out in reverse order. Use new copper washers of the distributor housing mounting bolts. The driver (1) should be inserted into the recess (2) of the camshaft.
