Removal and installation the cylinder head cover (BMW 7 Series E38)

Left cylinder head



1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. Remove the top engine cover and injector housing.

When installing, pay attention to the correct position of the conical washer.


9. Screw tools No.13 5 422 into the released threaded holes and remove the injectors using special tool No.13 5 421.



If the injector sealing ring remains in the cylinder head, replace it. Clean the injector seating surfaces in the cylinder head.

10. Unscrew the bolts (1) and disassemble the threaded connection (2).

12. Remove the positive battery terminal cover, loosen the nut and move the positive battery cable to the side.

13. Disconnect the fuel line (1) from the filter, release the fuel lines (2) from the holders (3) and move the fuel lines (2) to the side.

14. Remove the holders (1), loosen the clamps (2 and 3) and disconnect the hose (4).

15. Unscrew all the bolts securing the cylinder head cover (1) and remove it.

16. Replace the sealing gaskets. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and its cover.

17. Reinstall the CMP sensor on the new cylinder head cover. Replace the sensor O-ring if necessary.



18. Move the bracket (1) to the new cylinder head cover.

19. Transfer the brackets, positive battery terminal and rubber bushings to the new cylinder head cover.

20. Install the gasket (1), apply the sealing washer (2) and insert the sleeve (3) into it.



Use new gaskets.


21. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of dismantling the components.

Right cylinder head

3. Remove the clamp (1) of the electrical harness and loosen the nut (2).

4. Unscrew the bolts (1) and remove the cover (2).

5. Remove all cylinder head cover mounting bolts (see illustration) and remove it.

6. Replace the sealing gaskets (see illustration). Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and its cover.

7. Install the gasket (1), apply the sealing washer (2) and insert the sleeve into it (3).

Use new gaskets.


8. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of dismantling the components.
