It is recommended to use special tools to remove and install the seals. To access the front seal installed in the lower timing chain cover, remove the vibration damper. The procedure for accessing the rear seal is described below.
1. Remove the manual transmission or AT (see chapter Manual gearbox and clutch or Automatic transmission).
2. Drain the engine oil (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance).
3. Remove the flywheel (see section Removal and installation the flywheel).

4. Remove the bolts securing the crankshaft rear oil seal cover.
When installing, please pay attention to the different prescribed tightening torques for M6 and M8 bolts.

5. Carefully pry the oil seal cover at the base with two screwdrivers and remove it.
6. Remove the gasket and clean the mating surfaces.
7. Check the condition of the centering bushings and replace them if necessary.
8. Install new gasket. Apply a strip of gasket to the joint areas (2mm wide and 3mm high) sealant Drei-Bond 1209.
9. The rear oil seal cover is supplied complete with the oil seal. If necessary, remove the old oil seal from the cover and press in a new oil seal.
10. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of component dismantling.
