Adjusting the parking brake system (BMW 5 Series E12)
Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on stands.
Adjust the clearance between the brake shoes and the brake drums (see above).
Remove the protective rubber boot from the parking brake lever.
Loosen the threaded rod lock nut.
Raise the drive lever by five teeth of the sector, starting from the fully released position.
Tighten the adjusting nut until the wheels are braked.
Tighten the lock nut.
After this, make sure that the wheels rotate freely with the parking brake released.
To ensure that the drive cables are equally tensioned, simply lift the parking brake drive lever slightly and turn the wheels manually.
Remove the rear wheel brake disc.
Disconnect the lower brake shoe tension spring.
Turn and remove the retaining springs.
Disconnect the lower ends of the brake pads and remove the pads with an upward movement.
Remove the parking brake shoes.
Remove lever "A" (see photo), moving it to the right, push out bolt "B" and pull holder "C" to the left.
Adjust the clearance between the brake shoes and the brake drums (see above).

Replacing the parking brake pads of vehicles with rear disc brakes (525 and 528)
Remove the rear wheel brake disc.
Disconnect the lower brake shoe tension spring.
Turn and remove the retaining springs.
Disconnect the lower ends of the brake pads and remove the pads with an upward movement.
Replacing the release mechanism
Remove the parking brake shoes.
Remove lever "A" (see photo), moving it to the right, push out bolt "B" and pull holder "C" to the left.

Note: The parking brake lever ratio was changed for the 1978 model year as a result of the change in dimension "A" (see picture).
