Adjusting the parking brake (BMW 7 Series E38)

High-quality adjustment of the parking brake is possible only if the brake drive cable and all moving parts are operating normally and moving easily.

Adjusting brake pads

1. Loosen the left cable adjusting nut completely.



2. Completely unscrew one bolt on each rear wheel, then turn the wheel so that the threaded hole on the right wheel is at the 7 o'clock position, and on the left wheel - at the 5 o'clock position.



3. Tighten the adjusting screw until the wheel locks and turn the adjusting screw out 8 clicks.

Adjusting the drive cable

1. Release the parking brake completely.

2. Tighten the left cable adjusting nut until the rear wheels can barely turn.

3. Press the parking brake pedal evenly 10 times to the sixth tooth of the ratchet.

4. Fix the parking brake pedal on the third tooth of the ratchet.

5. Loosen the adjusting nut so that the rear wheels can barely be turned by hand.

6. Check the braking force: when cocked by 1 tooth, the wheel should be free (easily scrolled by hand), and when cocked to 4 teeth - motionless (does not scroll by hand).

Running-in of the parking brake mechanism

1. When driving on a separate site or on a road with light traffic, press the parking brake pedal at a speed of 40 km/h and hold it until the effect of the braking force is felt (clutch disengaged, transmission in neutral).

2. Press the parking brake pedal until it locks on the next tooth of the ratchet and drive another 200 m.

3. Repeat the steps described in paragraphs 10 and 11 again.
