Replacing disc brake pads («525» And «528»)
Note. Pads are replaced when their total thickness is reduced (pads and friction lining) up to 7 mm. Replace both rear brake pads at the same time.
Replacement is carried out in the same sequence as when replacing the front brake pads, taking into account the following:
- check the 20°inclination of the piston using a template;
- if necessary, turn the piston in the caliper with special pliers until the correct installation of the piston is obtained.
Replacing the brake pads of the drum brake mechanism («518», «520», «520i»)
Raise the rear of the car, put it on stands and remove the wheels.
Remove the brake drum.
Remove the shoes from the drum by turning the heads of the adjusting eccentrics and loosen the parking brake cable tension in case of difficult removal of the drum.
Remove the shoe pressure springs by turning the outer lock washer 90°, remove the cups and springs.
Remove the shoe springs (using a compression tool).
Take out blocks and disconnect a cable of a drive of a parking brake.
Wash the parts, check their condition, replace the defective parts and install the pads in the reverse order of removal. At the same time, install the pads in their original places. Before installing new pads, turn the adjusting eccentrics to their lowest position. Adjust the clearance between the pads and the brake drum.
Drum groove
In the presence of deep scratches, it is possible to machine the drum, maintaining the dimensions indicated in subsection «Detailed Specifications». This operation must be carried out in a workshop.
Adjustment of a backlash between pads and a brake drum («518», «520», «520i»)
The adjustment consists in setting the minimum possible clearance between each shoe and drum, i.e. two adjustment operations are carried out on each wheel.
Start the adjustment from the front shoe by turning the square located at the front of the car.
Move the blocks away from the drum as far as possible.
Rotate the wheel in the forward direction and make sure it turns freely.
Move the pads to the drum by turning the eccentrics in the direction of the arrows (see picture) until the shoe starts to lightly touch the drum.
Depress the brake pedal several times until the shoe is in place.
Slightly turn the eccentric in the opposite direction so that the wheel can rotate freely.
Rotating the wheel in the forward direction, perform the same actions with the eccentric located on the side of the rear of the car, and adjust the clearance of the rear shoe.
