Automatic air conditioner (BMW 5 Series E34)
1 - Temperature regulator (left side)
2 - Air supply intensity control switch
3 - Temperature regulator (right side)
4 - Automatic air distribution keys (right side)
5 - Key for switching on the AUC* mode or air recirculation mode
6 - Air conditioning switch
7 - Key for quick heating of windshield and side windows
8 - Automatic air distribution keys (left side). When a key is pressed, the corresponding LED lights up.
1, 3 — Temperature regulator (left/right side)
The temperature in the cabin is set by turning the regulator to the desired position (the temperature in degrees Celsius is indicated on the circular scale). The set temperature is quickly reached after the engine is started and usually remains unchanged, as it is maintained by an electronic regulator.
To avoid large temperature fluctuations and excessive load on the heating system, turn the regulators gradually.
In both extreme positions of the regulator on the driver's side, automatic temperature control does not occur on either the left or right side, and the heater (or air conditioning) operates at full power. If the electronic temperature sensor fails, also set the regulator to one of the extreme positions.
2 — Switch-regulator of air supply intensity
Position "0": the fan is off, there is no forced air supply.
Turn the switch to the right (with output from a fixed position) includes low fan speed and minimum air flow.
4, 8 — Automatic air distribution keys (right/left side)
Air distribution is carried out automatically depending on temperature conditions.
Air enters the passenger compartment in the following ways: through the air supply nozzles to the windshield and side front windows, through the guides and dosing grilles on the dashboard and front doors, and also through the grille on the upper side of the dashboard. In addition, air is supplied to the front of the passenger compartment through air ducts under the dashboard, and to the rear - through nozzles at the end of the center console.
After starting the engine in cold weather, air flows only through the glass heating nozzles until the heater temperature reaches +30°C.
This program allows you to create a comfortable microclimate in the cabin in almost any weather conditions.
For optimum operation of the automatic air supply control system, do not cover all the grilles on the instrument panel.
Air flow through all nozzles and grilles without automatic air flow control
This program is recommended in hot weather when ventilation or cooling of the lower part of the passenger compartment is required.
Attention: If the windshield and side windows freeze while driving and pressing key 7 is not desirable: press the key, increase the air flow and regulate its output using the ventilation grilles.
Air intake only through the lower air ducts (front and back)
In this mode, the window heating nozzles are slightly open, and there is no air supply to the grilles at the end of the center console.
This program is used, for example, in cold weather, when ventilation is not needed and you want to quickly warm your feet.
Automatic Outdoor Air Control (AUC)* key
This system automatically monitors the level of harmful substances in the outside air and, if necessary, blocks its flow into the car interior.
Pressing the key in sequence allows you to select three operating modes:
- Indicator lights do not light: outside air is entering.
- The left indicator lamp is on: the system sensors have registered an increased concentration of harmful substances in the outside air. If pollution increases, the air supply to the passenger compartment is automatically blocked and only the air in the passenger compartment will be used (recirculation mode).
- The right indicator lamp is on: air recirculation mode is on.
Air recirculation mode activation key
This mode is recommended when the outside air is heavily polluted - the air in the cabin circulates and prevents outside air from entering.
Although the air conditioner automatically switches to the dehumidification mode to improve air quality, it is not recommended to switch on the recirculation mode for a long time.
Note: If the windows start to fog up when the recirculation mode is on, turn off this mode (or AUC) and turn on the air conditioner by pressing button 6.
Air conditioner on/off button
When you press the button, the air conditioner turns on, starting from a temperature of +1°C. The control lamp signals that the air conditioner is on. The air is cooled and dried.
In some cases, when the air humidity is high, it is recommended to periodically turn on the air conditioner so that excess moisture condenses on the evaporator, and the air in the cabin is thus dried.
At maximum cooling capacity, the system automatically switches to air recirculation mode (with a small proportion of outside air) and the windshield blower nozzles close.
Quick heating on/off key (and drying) windshield and side windows
Glass fogs up due to the difference in temperature between the outside and inside of the car or due to high humidity in the car interior (condensation forms). In this case, the only way to quickly eliminate condensation is by intensively supplying hot air directly to the glass.
After pressing this button, the fast glass heating mode is automatically turned on, no further actions are required. The maximum effect is achieved only with a warmed-up engine. Pressing this button again automatically restores the previous operating mode.
Note: When you press this button for the first time after starting the engine, the rear window heating is also switched on.
After the engine has stopped, a characteristic sound may be heard, caused by the actuators of the automatic air conditioner setting the air duct valves to a stationary position.
Temperature distribution in the cabin for comfortable conditions: "warm feet - cool head"
Driver and front passenger
The air flow coming out through the grilles on the instrument panel and in the front doors is adjusted by turning the knurled roller 1 (but not at maximum cooling capacity).
- Up: warmer.
- Down: colder.
Rear passengers
The grilles located on the center console can be opened and adjusted to the desired position. Only outside air passes through these grilles, and when the air conditioner is on, cooled air passes through them.
Rear ventilation is automatically stopped when the driver switches on the following programs:
- AUTO — (only in cold weather)
- Air intake only through the lower air ducts

Microfilter*
The microfilter traps dust particles and pollen present in the air taken in from outside. Pollen is absorbed with 100% efficiency, dust - 60%. The filter is replaced as part of maintenance at a BMW service station. The need for early replacement can be determined by a significant decrease in the maximum air flow.
