"Kick-Down" mode

For rapid acceleration, the accelerator pedal can be pressed beyond the full throttle position, passing the point of increased pedal resistance.

At the same time, the transmission switches to a lower gear to ensure faster acceleration (at a certain range of vehicle speeds). Shifting to higher gears occurs as the engine speed increases.

E - economical program

Initial position after starting the engine to ensure the lowest fuel consumption,

S - sports program

Used for sporty driving. Due to later upshifting, the engine's power reserves are fully utilized.

* - winter program

Used for driving in cold weather. With the lever in position D, gears 2 through 5 are shifted to provide the best performance in winter conditions.

At lever positions 4, 3 and 2 the selected gear will be maintained. This means that starting off will also take place in this gear.

Position 4, for example, is convenient in winter on slippery roads, as it allows starting without slipping and prevents unwanted gear changes.

M - manual control program

Program for driving conditions in which the selected gear should be maintained (in position D 3rd or 4th gear). This means that starting off will also take place in this gear. This program is used, for example, on hills or when towing a trailer in the "1" position, and in winter on slippery roads in the "3" position. ensuring a smooth start and no unwanted gear changes.

Electronically controlled AT indicator lamp

The lamp should go out after the engine starts.

If the lamp does not go out or lights up while driving or a message appears on the automatic diagnostic system display "Getriebeprogramm" ("Emergency program"), this means that a malfunction has occurred in the control electronics.

At the same time, it is possible to move the AT control lever to any position, but when forward gear is engaged, the car will only move in 4th gear.

BMW 535i: To be able to drive in 3rd gear – for better use of engine power – you need to switch off the engine when the car is stationary and then start it again.

Caution: Do not work in the engine compartment with the AT lever in any position other than N and P.
