Automatic transmission (AT) (BMW 5 Series E34)

Possible positions of the automatic transmission control lever (1):
  • BMW 520i, 525i: P R N D 4 3 2
  • BMW 535i, 524td: P R N D 3 2 1

AT with electronic control*

Additionally, it has three programs (2) that can be switched on with a switch.

BMW 520i, 525i: to turn on:

  • E (economical program) - press the S switch (sports program)
  • S (winter program) - set the switch to the desired position.

BMW 535i:

  • E (economical program) - press the S switch (sports program)
  • M (manual program) set the switch to the desired position.

Please note that:

The engine can only be started when the lever is in positions P and N.

Under the handle of the lever there is a lock button, which prevents the lever from being mistakenly moved to some of the positions. To release the lock, press the button.

Before engaging the forward gear, press the brake pedal, as the car will move slowly even at idle if this gear is engaged. After moving the lever to the position corresponding to the forward gear, wait until the gear is engaged, accompanied by a slight push, and only then press the accelerator pedal.

Before engaging the forward gear, press the brake pedal, as the car will move slowly even at idle…

If you accidentally move the lever to the N position while driving at high speed, release the gas immediately. Wait until the engine reaches idle speed, and then move the lever to the desired position.

Before you leave the vehicle with the engine running, move the AT control lever to position P or N and apply the parking brake.

Before you leave the vehicle with the engine running, move the AT control lever to position P or N…

P - parking position

Switch on only after the car has come to a complete stop. The drive wheels are locked.

R - reverse gear

Turn on only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.

N - neutral position (idling)

Switch on only during long breaks in movement. Switching on while driving is allowed only in case of danger of skidding of the car.

D - the main driving mode with automatic gear shifting

This position corresponds to the normal driving mode. All forward gears are switched automatically
  • 4 (BMW 520i, 525i)
  • 3 (BMW 535i, 524td) — gear shift limitation mode.

This position should be selected if driving conditions are such that frequent 5-4-5 or 4-3-4 gear changes occur with the D lever position. The changes are performed automatically, but 5th or 4th gear, respectively, is not engaged.
  • 3 and 2 (BMW 520i, 525i) — gear shift limitation mode when driving on mountain roads and in engine braking mode.
  • 2 and 1 (BMW 535i) — gear shift limitation mode when driving on mountain roads and in engine braking mode.

Turn on these modes when driving in the mountains, as well as on long climbs and descents. This makes better use of engine power, increases the engine braking effect and does not cause excessively frequent shifting to higher gears.

These positions can be selected at any speed.

The transmission will shift into these gears automatically at the appropriate speed.
