The trailer limits maneuverability, climbing ability, acceleration and braking capabilities, the vehicle's cornering behavior and other dynamic characteristics.
Information about the permissible weight of the towed load and the maximum permissible load on the coupling device can be found in the section "Specifications". Data on the permissible mass of the towed load is also contained in the vehicle's passport. For information on the possibility of increasing it, please contact a BMW workshop.
Maximum permissible load on the coupling device
We are talking about the load with which the drawbar of the sight presses on the ball head of the hitch. You can determine it using household scales.
The minimum allowable load is 25 kg, and with a towed load of more than 1600 kg - 50 kg.
The permissible load value must not be exceeded, but it is desirable to maintain it as accurately as possible.
Trailer loading should be carried out in such a way that the load is placed as low as possible and as close as possible to the axis of the bridge. Lowering the center of gravity of the trailer significantly improves the stability of the vehicle with the trailer.
Do not exceed the gross trailer weight limit (axle load) and, accordingly, the maximum permissible mass of the towed cargo. The smaller value is decisive.
The weight with which the trailer tongue presses on the ball head of the hitch is added to the weight of the vehicle. At the same time, the maximum permitted vehicle weight and rear axle load must not be exceeded. The load capacity is reduced due to the subtraction of the mass of the towing device from its value, and when towing a trailer, also the weight falling on the ball head of the coupling device.
The trailer hitch* with detachable ball head must be BMW certified. It must only be installed by an authorized BMW workshop. The same applies to the installation of additional electrical equipment (for example, an indicator of the operation of the trailer direction indicators).
The removable ball head should be coated with grease, this will greatly facilitate its removal and installation.
Features of the operation of electrical equipment when driving with a trailer When transporting a trailer, you should take into account the increased consumption of electricity. Therefore, taking into account the limited capacity of the battery, the inclusion of current consumers should be short.
BMW 525i, 535i:
The electrical circuits of the reversing lights, brake lights and fog lights are protected by fuses, which are located in a separate box located behind the lining on the left in the trunk.
When installing the hitch after leaving the factory, it is recommended to reinforce the suspension. You may also need to refine the engine cooling system. You can do this at a BMW service station.
As a rule, driving with a trailer requires the installation of an additional rear-view mirror on the car. Mirrors must be adjusted so that the driver can see the rear edge of the trailer from both sides. You can buy and install mirrors at a BMW workshop.
Gradeability is limited to 12% for safety reasons and to avoid interfering with traffic, and 8% when towing a trailer with a maximum load.
Trailer towing places high demands on the condition of the braking system. The slopes require special attention. At the entrance to them, it is necessary to switch to a lower gear - up to the first (set the AT control lever to the position "1" or "2") - then move downhill at low speed. Do not keep the brake pedal depressed all the time, slow down with short presses on it.
If your vehicle has an ABS* system, it is recommended to brake in such a mode that it is activated.
When towing a trailer, do not exceed 80 km/h. The permissible load is calculated so that at this speed the car has optimal dynamic characteristics, If, as the speed increases, the trailer begins to "swing" from side to side, slowly reduce speed without making sudden movements of the steering wheel.
Regularly check the pressure in the tires of the tractor and trailer.
Be sure to check the operation of the trailer rear light unit before driving.
Drawbar cover
To open it, depress the spring clips in both recesses with a screwdriver.
Before removing and installing the ball head, read the instructions that come with it.
