Seat belt buckle tensioner (BMW 7 Series E32)
The seat belt buckle tensioner is installed in the front seat. In the event of a frontal collision, it ensures that the seat belt fits tightly to the occupant's body and prevents the occupant from slipping out from under the seat belt. The seat belt buckle tensioner is activated in the event of a severe frontal impact by the airbag/seat belt buckle tensioner electronic control unit.
Depending on the force of the impact, the control unit gives a command to activate the belt tensioner or also to activate the airbag.
The control unit's command ignites a small charge in the seat belt tensioner. The resulting gases move the piston in the tensioner tube forward; the piston is connected by a rod to the seat belt buckle. The seat belt buckle is pulled downwards. This selects the free play and slackening of the seat belt.
A deployed seat belt pretensioner is detected by the airbag/pretensioner indicator lamp lighting up. When deployed, the seat belt operates as if the pretensioner were not installed.
The seat belt tensioner is not serviceable. Once triggered, it must be replaced as a set.
Replacement and inspection of the seat belt buckle tensioner/airbag system must be performed by a workshop. Even the slightest modification to the design is not allowed.
If the seat belt tensioner has been activated during an accident, it must be replaced with a new one.
Before working on the tensioner, you need to disconnect the negative wire from the battery. Then the negative contact of the battery must be insulated to prevent accidental connection.
A seat belt tensioner that has not been used and has been removed from a vehicle must be stored in a closed box.
The seat belt tensioner and control unit are sensitive to impacts. If they have fallen from a height of more than 50 cm, they must not be reinstalled. When welding, the clamps of the welding machine wires must be positioned as close as possible to the welding site. In all cases, the seat belt tensioner control unit must be disconnected.
The airbag/tensioner control unit is located under the center console. To prevent malfunctions, do not place magnetized objects near the unit. The seat belt tensioner and its control unit must not be exposed to temperatures exceeding 90°C, even for a short time. Damaged or faulty parts must not be repaired under any circumstances. Under no circumstances must any parts of the airbag/tensioner system be opened. Before installation, make sure that the negative cable is disconnected from the battery and the negative terminal of the battery is insulated. Never remove the tensioner yourself. It is explosive!
The airbag/seat belt tensioner indicator lamp should come on when the ignition is turned on and go out after 4 seconds.
If the indicator lamp does not light when the ignition is turned on, there is a malfunction in the system.
If the lamp does not light while driving, there is a fault in the airbag system. In this case, it should be noted that the airbag/belt buckle tensioner system is no longer ready to deploy.
Remove the front seat.
Seat with mechanical movement: disengage the seat belt buckle tensioner. To do this, turn the lever (1) 90° to the left (place vertically relative to the seat surface) and unhook the sheathed cable (2) upwards from the support and drive lever.
Seat with electric drives: Disengage the tensioner. To do this, turn the slotted screw (2) so that the mark in the window (3) of the belt changes to red (1 - cable in a sheath).

Note: To dispose of a failed tensioner, please contact a workshop.
Caution: To prevent accidental deployment of the seat belt pretensioner and air bag, follow these guidelines.

Disabling the seat belt tensioner
Remove the front seat.

Seat with mechanical movement: disengage the seat belt buckle tensioner. To do this, turn the lever (1) 90° to the left (place vertically relative to the seat surface) and unhook the sheathed cable (2) upwards from the support and drive lever.
