Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Remove the intake manifold.
Unscrew the plug bolt (1) on the high-pressure fuel pump.

Screw in the adapter (1) and the dial indicator (2) instead of the plug bolt and tighten it slightly (provide a preliminary force).

Turn the crankshaft clockwise towards TDC of the first cylinder until the indicator needle remains at the deepest point for some time. The start of the turn should be at least 60-90° before TDC. The piston of the first cylinder will then be at TDC when both cams of the first cylinder on the side of the drive chain are directed upward. To check, remove the oil filler cap and check the cams.
To turn the engine over, engage fifth gear, release the parking brake and move the car. You can also apply the parking brake, set the gearbox to neutral and turn the crankshaft by the center pulley bolt using a socket head.
Set the dial indicator to zero.
Remove the plug (1) from the cylinder block.

Turn the crankshaft clockwise two revolutions until it is possible to insert a suitable rod or drill through the hole in the cylinder block at TDC into the flywheel hole.
Caution: Do not turn the engine in the opposite direction - this will lead to incorrect measurement results.
Now the dial indicator should show a rise of 0.95+0.02 mm with the new drive chain.
Attention: If the drive chain has a mileage of more than 20 thousand km, the indicator should show a lift of 0.90+0.02 mm.
If the specified values are not achieved, the fuel injection pump must be adjusted.
Loosen the bolt (3) without unscrewing it.

Loosen nuts (1) and (2).
Caution: Do not loosen the nuts too much, 2-3 turns, to prevent tension from the chain.
Turn the fuel injection pump until the dial indicator shows the desired value.
Tighten the nuts and bolt in sequence from 1 to 3 to a torque of 25 Nm.
Remove the locking rod and check the adjustment again. In this case, turn the crankshaft only to the right.
Remove the dial indicator and rod.
Insert the plug into the cylinder block.
Install the central plug bolt with a new sealing ring and tighten to 25 Nm.
Install the oil filler cap.
Install the intake manifold.
Connect the negative cable to the battery.
Start the engine, bleeding the injection system if necessary.
After the test drive, check the tightness of the central plug bolt and tighten the bolt if necessary.
