Below is a description for the S5D 310Z manual transmission.
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Remove the exhaust system assembly and its heat shields (see chapter Fuel and exhaust systems).
3. Disconnect the lambda probe wiring from the subframe crossmember and from the manual transmission.

4. Disconnect the D/W reversing light wiring connector. Disconnect the wiring from the subframe crossmember and from the manual transmission.
5. On the engine M62 remove the CKP sensor (see chapter Engine electrical systems).

6. Disconnect the cardan shaft from the manual transmission and hang it up. Support the manual transmission with a jack. Unscrew the bolts and remove the frame crossmember.

7. On models with engines M51, M52, M60 and M62 place a block (tool no. 23 3 030 for M60 and M62 engines, or no. 11 7 360 for M51 and M52 engines) between the engine oil pan and the front axle beam. On models with M60 and M62 engines, turn the front wheels to the left as far as they will go and lower the gearbox.

8. Remove the retainer (4), remove the gear shift drive rod from the joint and remove the washers (5).
When installing, lubricate the gear shift rod.

9. Use a screwdriver to lift up the locking bracket. Remove the locking bracket pivot pin and remove the gearshift lever support rod.
Lubricate the pins when installing.
10. Remove the clutch slave cylinder without disconnecting the pressure line.
The vacuum in the actuator cylinder should be released gradually so that air is not sucked into the cylinder through the sealing cuff.

11. Support the manual transmission with a jack, unscrew its mounting bolts, move the manual transmission back and remove it with a downward movement.
When removing and installing the manual transmission, it should not hang on the input shaft, otherwise the driven clutch disc may be deformed. When installing, screw in the mounting bolts only together with the washers!
12. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Pay attention to the centering bushings: if necessary, remove them from the manual transmission housing and insert them into the cylinder block. Replace damaged centering bushings. Remove the coupling and the clutch release fork, clean them and lubricate them in the appropriate places. If the grease on the manual transmission input shaft is sticky, replace the clutch slave disk.
13. Take this opportunity to check the driven clutch disc for rust in the splines and replace the disc if necessary. Use a rag to remove old grease and dust from the splines of the driven clutch disc that has formed as a result of the friction lining wearing down. Then use a brush to apply a thin layer of grease for splined connections evenly over the entire surface of the splines, the spline groove and the neck.
14. After installation, bleed the clutch hydraulic drive, adjust the transmission fluid level and make sure there are no leaks.
