High pressure fuel pump (N7) (BMW X3 E83)

Removal and installation/replacing the high-pressure pump (N47)



Attention:
  • After installation, device 118741 must remain in the sprocket until all work is completed. When working with oil, fuel and coolant circuits, the generator must be protected from contamination.
  • Cover the generator. Failure to comply with this condition may result in generator failure.


Note:
  • After disconnecting the distribution pipeline, be sure to seal the holes of the pump and receiver with special caps. 321270.
  • The position of the high pressure pump for driving the valves does not have any effect on the operation, however, it should be taken into account during removal and installation.
  • For greater clarity, all images are shown with the engine removed.


Attention:
  • Collect and dispose of leaking fuel.
  • Observe the applicable national disposal regulations.


1. Turn off the ignition.

2. The structure of the Common Rail system.

3. Remove the soundproofing casings.

4. Remove the intake manifold.

5. Remove the pre-heating system control unit.

6. Remove the stiffener plate.

7. Remove the rear panel of the unit protection.

8. Fix the position of the crankshaft.

9. Unlock the connector (1) and disconnect it from the dosing unit.

10. Disconnect the fuel supply and return lines from the high pressure pump.

Note: Clamps must be replaced during installation.


Tightening torque: 6.5 Nm.

11. Loosen the union nut (1) on the high-pressure pump using tool 371152

Tightening torque: 24 Nm.

12. Loosen the union nut on the high-pressure line (1) using tool 371152.

13. Remove the high pressure line.

Note: When installing, ensure that the rubber cushion (2) and abrasion protection are correctly installed on the high-pressure pipeline.


Tightening torque: 24 Nm.

14. Remove the front propeller shaft.

15. Open the timing belt cover from below.

Note:
  • The figure shows the cover on a removed engine.
  • Replace the O-ring cover.


Tightening torque: 20 Nm.

16. Screw in tool 118741 to position the high pressure pump sprocket. After this, remove the device…


16. Screw in tool 118741 to position the high pressure pump sprocket. After this, remove the device 118742.

Note: Tool 118741 remains in the timing belt cover until repair work is completed.


17. Remove the high pressure pump support.

18. Unscrew the mounting bolts from the front side of the high pressure pump.

19. Unscrew the mounting bolt (1) from the timing belt cover side.

20. Loosen the threaded fastening of the sprocket in the high pressure pump.

21. Remove the high pressure pump.

Note: The center bolt remains in the sprocket.


Tightening torque: 65 Nm.

  • The figure shows the high pressure pump sprocket (1) in the removed state.
  • To install the high-pressure pump shaft into the sprocket, tilt the high-pressure pump a few degrees if possible (align the groove with the protrusion (arrow)). Then, rotate the high-pressure pump back to its mounting position.

  • When installing a new high pressure pump, it is necessary to align the pump sprocket. To do this, turn the high pressure pump with ordinary pliers on the stepped part of the shaft by 45° counterclockwise (direction of rotation).
  • Avoid damaging the shaft.


Note: When installing the high pressure pump support, the following sequence must be followed:

  • 1. Tighten until the head fits (without a gap), sequence 1-2-3-4.
  • 2. Tighten finally to 19 Nm. Tightening sequence 2-3-4-1.


22. Assemble the engine.



23. To remove air from the fuel system:

24. Bleed the fuel system in accordance with the instructions of the BMW tester.

25. Check the fuel system for leaks.

26. Reset the fuel pump correction values in accordance with the instructions of the BMW tester.
