Bleeding the power steering system (BMW X5 E53)

Attention! Before removing the tank cap, thoroughly clean the tank and all surfaces directly adjacent to it. Prevent contamination from entering the system.


Bleeding of the power steering system should be carried out in the following order. Park the car on a level surface. Clean the power steering reservoir, open the plug and fill it with working fluid to the "Max" mark.

Start the engine and bring it to a stable idle mode. Slowly turn the steering wheel from one extreme position to the other (2 - 3 times) to remove air from the system. Let the engine run until air bubbles stop appearing in the tank. Turn off the engine and check the oil level at the "Max" mark. Add oil in small portions.

Close the tank with the plug (Fig. 12.6), without mixing it up. The cold oil level (at a temperature of +20°C) should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the oil level indicator.
