Replacing the steering gear bellows (BMW X5 E53)

            0

Attention! If traces of corrosion are found on the ground toothed rack, it is necessary to replace the steering mechanism and lubricate the rack teeth.

The replacement of the steering gear bellows must be carried out in the following order. If necessary, remove the side panel of the engine crankcase protection. Mark the installation depth of the transverse steering rod with chalk. This will make it easier to set the toe-in angle later.

Release both clamps of the clamp (1, Fig. 12.14), and loosen the lock nut (1, see Fig. 12.9). Unscrew the transverse steering rod (2) from the end and remove the protective cover.

If necessary, clean the toothed rack and the tie rod. If the ground surface of the toothed rack is damaged by corrosion, the steering gear must be replaced. Lubricate the rack teeth with a paste such as Calypsol D 4024-OK. Put on a new corrugated cover and secure it with clamps.

Screw the tie rod (2) into the end. Tighten the lock nut to 51 N·m (5.1 kgf·m). Check and adjust the front wheel alignment.
