Safety precautions when working on the steering system (BMW X5 E53)

            0

BMW cars of the X5 series with the E53 body are equipped with a series (front and side) inflatable airbags (AIRBAG) - "Airbag", the operation of which is based on the operation of a gas generator from pyrotechnic fuses. Work carried out on the steering system with AIRBAG requires increased attention and accuracy:
  • NBP does not replace the use of seat belts, but only complements them;
  • The NBP cannot be repaired or disassembled;
  • NBC requires optimal seat adjustment for a specific person;
  • The NBP must be replaced 10 years after its date of manufacture;
  • NBP are subject to mandatory disposal, since unused gas generators pose an increased danger to others;
  • work on the NBP should begin with disconnecting the "-" terminal of the battery and the ECU-NPB control system and a time delay for discharging the capacitor in its control system (not less than 30 sec).
  • do not expose the NBP to impact loads or falls. If it falls from a height of more than 50 cm, it must be replaced;
  • do not leave the removed NBP unattended and store it with the opening part facing upwards;
  • welding work on the body must be carried out only with the airbag switched off;
  • do not expose the NBP to temperatures above +75°C, even for short periods of time;
  • artificial activation of the airbag is carried out from a control panel located 10 m away from the vehicle.
