Bleeding the power steering (BMW X3 E83)

Attention:
  • Maintain exceptional cleanliness. Prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
  • When refilling with dirty auxiliary agents, dirt may get into the reservoir, which will significantly reduce the service life of the power steering. Do not use funnels or any other improvised means.
  • The fluid level may only be checked and adjusted when the engine is off. The temperature of the liquid should be around 20'C.
  • When checking the level, the cap must be screwed in completely.

1. Thoroughly clean the tank and everything around it.

2. Check and top up the fluid level.

Note:
  • When the engine is warmed up to operating temperature, the level may rise above the "MAX" mark. This is normal, as the mark on the dipstick is designed for a temperature of 20°C. When the engine is warm (fluid temperature 50-60°C), the level should be 10 mm above the "MAX" mark. Never drain the fluid below the "MAX" mark when the engine is warm.
  • Hydraulic fluid: list of BMW approved hydraulic fluids.

3. Start the engine.

4. Turn the steering wheel 2 times to the left and right until it stops. Add fluid if necessary (for example - in its complete absence).

5. Set the steering wheel to the straight ahead position and turn off the engine.

6. Check and top up the fluid level with the engine off.

7. Check the hydraulic system for leaks.
