Checking the cylinder head for leaks (BMW X5 E53)

The cylinder head leak test must be performed in the following order. Prepare the "11.6.400" device, consisting of the following devices: "11.6.401"; "11.6.402"; "11.6.403"; "11.6.404"; "11.6.406"; "11.6.407" and "11.6.408".

Disassemble the cylinder head and plug the cooling cavity holes using the "11.6.400" tool kit (Fig. 6.72), using the old cylinder head mounting bolts. Connect a compressed air source to the "11.6.406" tool.

Immerse the cylinder head in a water bath and create a test pressure of 4.5 bar (4.5 kgf/cm²). Check the cylinder head for cracks in the walls by the appearance of air bubbles. If cracks are found, replace the head.
