Removal and installation timing belt covers (BMW 5 Series E28)

This procedure applies to M20 and M40 engines only.


If your vehicle's radio is equipped with an anti-theft system, make sure you enter the correct code before disconnecting the battery.


If the instrument cluster displays the wrong language after connecting the battery, refer to Section Anti-theft audio system and instrument cluster language, which describes the procedure for installing the required language.


1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the drive coupling and fan shroud (see chapter Cooling system).

3. On the M20 engine, remove the radiator (see chapter Cooling system).

4. Remove the fan drive belt pulley.

5. Disconnect the standard sensor wiring, if equipped, that runs through the front of the timing belt cover and move it aside.

7. Remove the drive belt pulley and lower fan damper. Hold the center crankshaft pulley bolt while loosening the outer pulley/damper bolts.

8. Remove the bolts/nuts securing the timing belt covers to the engine.

9. Remove the top cover first, then the bottom cover.

There are two bushings on the top cover to align the top bolt positions. Make sure they are in place when reassembling.

10. Install in reverse order. Tighten the cover bolts securely.
