2. Jack up the front of the car and place it securely on axle stands.
3. Remove mudguards from under the engine.
4. Disconnect the hoses attached to the sump, where provided, and move them aside to provide access to the sump bolts.
5. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector to the left of the engine, next to the steering pump mounting bracket, where provided.
6. Give four bolts of a cover (indicated by arrows) And...
...remove the cast aluminum cover covering the back of the sump, if provided.
7. On models with M40 engines, unbolt and remove the lower part of the pallet and remove the gasket (this is necessary to provide access to the front mounting bolts).
8. Give a fixing bolt and pull out a tube of a gauge of level of oil from the pallet.
9. Check up a condition of a sealing ring and if necessary replace it.
10. On models with the M40 engine, give the engine mounting nuts on both sides. Then install a suitable winch and raise the engine just enough to remove the sump. For safety reasons, place axle stands or blocks of wood under the motor.
11. Give bolts of fastening of the pallet to the block of cylinders and forward/rear covers. The photo shows for a six-cylinder engine.
12. Tap the sump with a soft-faced hammer to break the gasket sealant and remove the sump from the engine.
13. Using a special scraper, scrape off all traces of the old gasket material from the cylinder block, timing chain cover, main rear oil seal housing and from the pallet. Be especially careful not to scratch the sealing surfaces of the timing chain cover gasket and stuffing box (they are made of aluminum, so they are quite soft).
14. Clean the sump with solvent and dry thoroughly. Check the sealing surfaces of the gasket for deformation. Remove any remaining dirt from the gasket mating surfaces with the sump and engine with a cloth soaked in a suitable solvent.
15. Before installing the pallet, apply a little RTV sealant to the mating surfaces of the front and rear covers with the cylinder block. Install a new pan gasket on the block. Apply more sealant if necessary to hold the gasket in place.
16. Carefully place the drip tray in place (being careful not to dislodge the gasket) and install the bolts. Tighten the bolts to the required torque alternately, starting with the bolts closest to the center of the pan and working diagonally. Do not overtighten them, as this may cause oil leaks.
17. Follow the rest of the installation procedure in the reverse order of removal. Install a new gasket on the bottom of the sump on models with M40 engines.
18. Finally, fill the engine with fresh oil (Chapter Car maintenance). Start the engine and check for leaks from the pan gasket or other components.
