2. Jack up the front of the vehicle and securely place it on axle supports.
3. Remove the mudguards from under the engine.

4. Disconnect the hoses attached to the pan where provided and move them aside to provide access to the pan bolts.

5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the oil level sensor located on the left side of the engine, near the steering pump mounting bracket where provided.

6. Remove the four cover bolts (indicated by arrows) and...

...remove the cast aluminum cover that covers the rear of the pan, if equipped.

7. On models with M40 engines, unbolt and remove the lower part of the pan and remove the gasket (this is necessary to provide access to the front mounting bolts).

8. Loosen the mounting bolt and pull the oil level gauge tube out of the pan.
9. Check the condition of the sealing ring and replace it if necessary.
10. On models with M40 engine, loosen the engine mounting nuts on both sides. Then install a suitable winch and lift the engine enough to remove the oil pan. For safety reasons, place axle supports or wooden blocks under the engine.

11. Loosen the bolts securing the oil pan to the cylinder block and front/rear covers. The photo shows a six-cylinder engine.
12. Tap the oil pan with a soft-faced hammer to break the gasket sealant and remove the oil pan from the engine.
13. Using a scraper, scrape off all traces of the old gasket material from the cylinder block, timing chain cover, main rear seal housing and from the oil pan. Be especially careful not to scratch the sealing surfaces of the timing chain cover gasket and the seal housing (they are made of aluminum, so they are quite soft).
14. Clean the oil pan with solvent and dry it thoroughly. Check the sealing surfaces of the gasket for deformation. Remove all traces of dirt from the mating surfaces of the gasket with the oil pan and engine with a rag soaked in a suitable solvent.
15. Before installing the oil pan, apply a small amount of RTV sealant to the mating surfaces of the front and rear covers to the cylinder block. Install the new oil pan gasket to the block. If necessary, apply a small amount of sealant to hold the gasket in place.
16. Carefully place the tray back in place (trying not to displace the gasket) and install the bolts. Tighten the bolts to the required torque one by one, starting with the bolts closest to the center of the pan and moving diagonally. Do not overtighten them, as this may cause oil leaks.
17. Perform the remainder of the installation procedure in the reverse order of removal. Install a new gasket to the bottom of the oil pan on M40 engine models.
18. Finally, fill the engine with fresh oil (Chapter Routine car maintenance). Start the engine and check for leaks through the oil pan gasket or other components.
