Adjusting and checking the selector lever lock (BMW 7 Series E38)
Adjustment

1. Set the selector lever (1) to position "P" (front shift linkage stop) and loosen the bolt (2). The rod (3) should move easily in the axial direction in the bracket (4).
2. Turn the ignition key to the on position "0" or remove it from the ignition switch. Press the lever (5) of the interlock system (Interlock) until it stops and tighten the bolt (2).
Checking the operation of the Interlock system
1. Turn on the ignition and return the key to the position "0" or remove it. The lever must not leave the "P" position. The Interlock system lever must be in contact with the selector lever.
2. Turn on the ignition and depress the brake pedal. The selector lever should now be able to be moved to any position.
3. Set the selector lever to all positions except "P" - in none of these positions should the key be able to be turned back to the position "0".
4. Set the selector lever to position "P" – the ignition key should be able to be turned to position "0" and remove from the ignition switch.
Checking the operation of the Shiftlock system
1. Turn on the ignition, set the selector lever to position "P" or "N" and depress the brake pedal – the control lever should unlock.
2. Start the engine and depress the brake pedal – when the engine speed is above 2500 rpm, the selector lever should lock in the "P" or "N" position.
3. Turn on the ignition, set the selector lever to the "R" position and release the brake pedal - when switching directly from the "R" position to "D" and from "D" to "R" when passing through the "N" position, the control lever should not lock. If the lever is held in the "N" position for more than 0.5 s, it should lock.
4. The selector lever must only be locked in position "P" or "N".
5. At speeds above 5 km/h, the selector lever should not lock.
