Removal and installation the steering column (BMW X3 E83)

1. Slide the upper section of the steering shaft into the steering column.

2. Remove the combination switch mount.

3. Disconnect the connectors (1, 2).


3. Disconnect the connectors (1, 2).

4. Disconnect the Interlock system rod from the steering column.

5. Hang the wire harness and remove it from the cable channel (3).

6. Turn the bracket (5) 45° downwards and remove it.

7. Remove from the bracket (5) and disconnect the connector (4).

8. Unscrew the screws (1, 2).


8. Unscrew the screws (1, 2).

Tightening torque: 21 Nm.

9. Unscrew the nuts.


9. Unscrew the nuts.



10. Remove the steering column downwards, removing it from the dashboard.

Note: Self-locking nuts must be replaced during installation.


Tightening torque: 18 Nm.

11. Move the cable channel.

Note: Only when replacing the steering column.


12. Reposition the lock cylinder.

Note: Only when replacing the steering column.


13. Reposition the steering wheel angle sensor.

Note: Only when replacing the steering column.


14. Installation should be carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the above notes.

15. Perform steering wheel angle sensor correction.

18. Check the freedom of movement of the steering column throughout the entire adjustment range in relation to adjacent parts/pipelines.

17. Turn the steering wheel all the way in both directions. In this case, the airbag indicator lamp should not light up.

18. Check the straightness of the vehicle's movement.
