Checking all glow plugs (BMW X5 E53)

            0

All glow plugs must be checked in the following order. Prepare the "61.1.473" and "61.1.475" devices. Read information from the DDE ECU fault memory. Check the fault messages and eliminate them. Erase faults from the ECU fault memory and turn off the ignition. Check the battery voltage, which must be more than 10.5 V, charge the battery if necessary. Disconnect the spark plug relay from the spark plug relay. When checking the glow plugs, the relay remains in the engine compartment.

Warning! Do not turn on glow plugs when removed, as there is a risk of injury (burn) and fire.

Do not measure the current strength on the engine glow plugs.

Check the glow plugs using a BMW multimeter or a Beru tester, according to the Manual for these devices. Replace damaged glow plugs and assemble the engine.

Note: If during the inspection one of the glow plugs is found to be faulty, the following elements must be checked:
  • wire from relay to glow plug;
  • glow plug connector; activate glow plug relay;
  • check the 100A fuse.

For further assistance, refer to the Electrical/Electronic Diagnostics Guide, section 1360, "Digital Diesel Electronic Control System".

Read and erase information from the fault memory of the DDE system ECU. Check the functioning of the DDE system.
