If there is an "ARS" system, unscrew the nut (1, Fig. 6.135) and remove the pressure pipes (2). Unscrew the bolts (3) and remove the holder (4).

Loosen the nut and disconnect the "+" wire of the battery from the starter. Loosen the bolts securing the starter. Pull the starter slightly forward from the gearbox support and turn it so as to facilitate access to the control circuit wires on the starter. Loosen the nuts and disconnect the control circuit wires from the starter.
The starter should be installed in the reverse order, while the wire fastening nuts must be tightened to the following torque:
- M5 – 5.0 N·m (0.5 kgf·m);
- M6 – 7.0 N·m (0.7 kgf·m);
- M8 – 13.0 N·m (1.3 kgf·m).
Tighten the starter mounting bolts to the gearbox housing to a torque of 45 N·m (4.5 kgf·m). When installing, check the drive pinion and the starter ring gear for damage; replace the starter if necessary. The starter solenoid relay should also be replaced using the same technology as for the M54 … N62 engines. When installing the traction relay, tighten the wire mounting nuts to the torque specified above.
Caution! When tightening the nuts, do not allow the cable lug to turn, as there is a risk of short circuit to the starter housing.
When replacing the "+" wire between the generator and the starter in the engine compartment, it is necessary:
- on the generator, tighten the "D+" nut to a torque of 7.0 N·m (0.7 kgf·m), and the "B+" nut to a torque of 13 N·m (1.3 kgf·m).
- on the starter, tighten the M5 nut to a torque of 5.0 N·m (0.5 kgf·m), the M6 nut to a torque of 7.0 N·m (0.7 kgf·m), and the M8 nut to a torque of 13.0 N·m (1.3 kgf·m).
