2. From a 6-cylinder engine, remove the oil pan, primary timing chain and flywheel (faceplate) as shown in chapter 2B.
3. Remove the pistons and connecting rods from the engine as described in the previous paragraph. If no repair work is to be done on the pistons and connecting rods, there is no need to remove the cylinder head or push the pistons out of the cylinders. The pistons should be pushed upward only so far that the lower heads of the connecting rods do not touch the crankshaft.
Caution: If the cylinder head is not removed and the pistons are pushed upwards, make sure that they do not hit the valve opening.
4. Check the crankshaft end play as specified in paragraph 13.
5. On all engines except the N42 4-cylinder engine, remove the rear crankshaft oil seal housing (from the flywheel side) together with the gasket (Fig. 10.5).

6. From a 6-cylinder engine, remove the oil pump drive chain and, if necessary, the crankshaft sprocket as indicated in chapter 2B.
7. The main bearing caps of the 4-cylinder M43TU engine must be numbered from 1 to 5, starting from the front of the engine (i.e. from the side of the timing chain drive). If the lids are not numbered, do it yourself.
8. The main bearing caps of a 6-cylinder engine must be numbered from 1 to 7 from the intake manifold side, starting from the front side of the engine, i.e. from the timing chain (Fig. 10.8). If there is no marking on the caps, number them yourself.

9. On all engines except the 4-cylinder N42 engine, unscrew the main bearing cap bolts and remove the caps (Fig. 10.9). Remove the bearing shells from the caps and tie them to the caps.

10. On the 4-cylinder N42 engine, the main bearing caps are combined into a common block, which serves to strengthen the crankcase. Unscrew the cap block mounting bolts and remove it from the engine.
11. On 4-cylinder engines, the thrust bearing, which limits the axial play of the crankshaft, can be located on support No.4 or 5. The exact location of the thrust bearing can be determined by the groove for the bearing in the block of covers.
12. On a 6-cylinder engine, the thrust bearing is located in the cover of support No.6. Also note that the bolts of cover No.5 5 hold the bracket of the oil pickup pipe.
13. Lift the crankshaft off the supports. Be careful - the shaft is heavy.
14. Remove the upper bearing shells from the bearing bores in the cylinder block and tie the bearing shells to the caps of the corresponding bearing shells (fig. 10.14).
