Warnings:
- It is forbidden to connect with «weight» voltage regulator excitation terminal or connecting wire.
- It is not allowed to interchange the wires connected to the voltage regulator.
- Do not disconnect the wires from the voltage regulator or battery while the generator is running.
- Never remove the alternator from the vehicle without disconnecting the wires from the battery.
- Do not operate a voltage regulator that is not connected to «weight» generator. This will lead to immediate failure of the regulator.
- It is forbidden to check (by car or at the stand) generator-voltage regulator assembly without including the battery in the circuit.
When checking the generator, the battery must be in good condition and fully charged.
If you need to charge the battery on the car using a charger, be sure to disconnect from the terminals «+» And «—» battery wires connecting it to the electrical circuits of the car.
When connecting the battery, its terminal «—» should connect with «weight» car. Reversing polarity will damage the rectifier and voltage regulator diodes.
Disconnect the battery before carrying out any electrical work on the vehicle «masses» and disconnect the wires from the generator.
Disconnect the wires from the battery terminals, disconnect the generator multi-pin connector.
Disconnect the red wire from the generator terminal «B+».
Loosen the alternator clamp bolts.
Lift up the generator and take it out.
Installation of the generator is made in an order, the return to removal. At the same time, adjust the tension of the drive belt, see section «Engine» «Cooling system».
Generator brush replacement (without removing the alternator)
Disconnect the alternator multi-pin connector.
Remove the brush holder.
Unsolder both brush leads.
Install new brushes and solder their leads.
Disassembly and assembly of the generator
When disassembling and assembling the generator, be guided by the detailed view. Check:
- condition, degree of wear, fit of the brushes to the rings and the pressing force of the brushes;
- appearance of slip rings. The slip rings can only be cleaned with a clean rag soaked in petrol or trichlorethylene. Clean slip rings only with fine-grained abrasive paper. It is forbidden to use an emery cloth for this;
- bearing condition. They do not require maintenance, as they have a long-life lubrication;
- appearance of the rotor and stator. Make sure that their windings do not have any breaks or burn marks.
Under no circumstances should the electrical characteristics of the generator be tested in a circuit with a voltage greater than 14 V.
When checking the diode rectifier, the DC voltage should not exceed 12 V.
Use white spirit or trichlorethylene to clean the parts of the generator, then immediately dry them, especially the windings, with compressed air.
Rectifier diodes are temperature sensitive. Therefore, when replacing them, solder as quickly as possible using tongs with sponges. The use of an electric soldering iron is not recommended (its power should not exceed 300 W), since if its insulation is damaged, a short circuit may occur in the rectifier diodes.
