Wheels — replacement and balancing (BMW 7 Series E32)

            0

When replacing and rearranging wheels, it is not recommended to measure their rotation direction, as the tires will wear out faster. It is also not recommended to swap the rear and front wheels.

To tighten the wheel mounting bolts, use a torque wrench to ensure that all bolts are tightened evenly.

Loosen the wheel bolts with the vehicle on the ground. At the same time, apply the parking brake or engage first gear to prevent the vehicle from moving.

Caution: When replacing or removing tubeless tires, be sure to replace the rubber valve for safety reasons.

For closed wheel bolts, pry off the protective caps. Insert the key into the lock until it stops, so that the slot is parallel to the oval recess. Turn the key 90° and pull it off together with the part.

Installation is carried out in the reverse order. When pulling out the key, it is necessary to press the sleeve against the wheel bolt. Put on the protective cap.

If equipped, remove the wheel bolt guard as follows: Turn the cover (1) slightly to the left with the wheel bolt wrench and remove it. Then insert the adapter (3) into the wheel bolt (2) and unscrew the bolt.

Please note: The adapter must always be carried with you in the car.

Raise and support the vehicle.

Turn the wheel so that the valve (bottom arrow) was directed vertically downwards.

Turn the wheel so that the valve (bottom arrow) was directed vertically downwards.

Before removing, mark the position of the disc relative to the hub so that you can then install the balanced wheel in the same position.

Note: Depending on the rim, different wheel bolts may be used. Be sure to use only bolts certified by the company.

When installing non-original light metal wheels, you must use the corresponding wheel bolts instead of the old original wheel bolts. You should always carry a few spare wheel bolts with you.

Light alloy wheels are coated with a clear protective varnish to protect against corrosion. When replacing a wheel, make sure not to damage it, and if this does happen, restore the varnish layer.

Before installing the wheel, clean the centering seat of the disc for the hub and the contact surfaces of the disc from dirt and grease residues and lubricate them with a thin layer of protective grease.

Clean dirty bolts. Replace them if the threads are damaged or corroded. Do not lubricate the threads of the wheel bolts.

Before putting on the disc, insert the mounting pin into the upper threaded hole. After screwing in several wheel bolts, remove the mounting pin.

Tighten the wheel bolts crosswise in several passes to a torque of 100 Nm.

Caution: One-sided or uneven tightening of wheel bolts can cause deformation of the disc and/or wheel hub. When installing new discs after the first 1000 km, tighten the wheel bolts again to the required torque.

Wheel balancing

The wheels installed on the car are balanced at the factory. Balancing is necessary to compensate for uneven weight distribution and non-uniformity of the disk material.

When driving, unbalanced wheels are determined by shaking and vibrations of the car. At high speed, the steering wheel begins to shake.

Typically, this shaking only occurs within a certain speed range and disappears as the speed increases or decreases.

This imbalance can, over time, cause damage to suspension joints, steering joints and shock absorbers.

Wheels should be balanced every 20,000 km and after tire repairs, as wear and repairs change the weight distribution on the tires.
