Removal and installation the steering column and steering angle sensor assembly (BMW 7 Series E38)

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. Remove the steering wheel (see section Removal and installation the steering wheel, airbag unit and its contact ring).

3. Remove the lower section of the instrument panel trim (see chapter Body).

4. Remove the ring with the groove (1).

When installing, pay attention to the position of the ring (1) in relation to the spring retaining ring (2).

6. If equipped, disconnect the Interlock system rod from the ignition switch.

7. Loosen the clamp bolt and press the steering shaft downwards.

8. If necessary, remove the steering angle sensor from the steering shaft.

9. Chisel off the disposable screw or cut off its head.

10. Disconnect all wires leading to the steering column, remove the screw and disconnect the ignition switch connector.



11. On models with automatic adjustment, unscrew the bolts (3).

12. Unscrew the mounting bolts of the support pipe and remove the steering column.

13. Installation is carried out in reverse order. After installation:
  • Match the steering angle for EDC and DSC systems to the actual angle.
  • Check the steering column for freedom of movement throughout its entire adjustment range in relation to adjacent components/pipes.
