Removal and installation the ignition distributor (BMW 3 Series E30)
Removal
Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
Four-cylinder engine
Remove the protective cap from the ignition distributor. First disconnect the ground wire.
Table. Ignition timing / CO content / Engine idle speed
Cars with a catalytic converter

Remove the ignition distributor cover "1" by using a screwdriver to release the 2 locking clips "2" on the sides of the distributor.
Disconnect connector "3" of the pulse sensor.
Six-cylinder engine
Remove the air filter housing with the air flow meter.
Remove the distributor cap by pressing the 2 locking screws with a screwdriver and turning them ¼ turn to the left.
Disconnect the ground wire.
Remove the spark plug wires and remove the spark plugs.
Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the vacuum diaphragm
Set the engine to the TDC position of the 1st cylinder. To do this, set the gearbox in neutral and turn the engine with a 27/30 mm wrench by the central bolt of the crankshaft pulley in the direction of engine rotation (clockwise) until the mark on the contact tongue of the ignition distributor runner coincides with the mark on the distributor body; if necessary, lift the boot.

At the same time, the arrow "E" on the timing case cover must coincide with the top dead center mark "F" on the crankshaft pulley.
Loosen the tension bolt "4" of the ignition distributor (figure W-1203).
Remove the ignition distributor while turning it slightly.
Note: In this case, the retaining brackets "2" (figure W-1203) must not block the pulse sensor disk, otherwise the disk may rotate relative to the hub.
On a six-cylinder engine, unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the ignition distributor.
Caution: Do not turn the engine when the distributor is removed.
Installation
Before installation, check the engine position at top dead center of cylinder 1.
Turn the distributor shaft so that the marks on its runner and housing match. Then turn the shaft approximately 30° against the direction of rotation of the distributor. The working direction of rotation is clockwise.
Insert the ignition distributor. On a six-cylinder engine, turn the distributor slightly when installing it so that the oil pump drive engages.
Check whether the contact of the ignition distributor rotor is above the mark on the distributor housing, otherwise remove and reinsert the ignition distributor.
Tighten the mounting bolts. Tightening torque on a four-cylinder engine: 10 Nm, on a six-cylinder engine: 20 Nm.
Connect the pulse sensor connector.
Clean the inside surface of the distributor cap (see section "Checking the distributor cap").
Install the cover. The cover protrusion should enter the recess in the distributor housing. Check the correct installation by turning the cover in both directions. Secure the distributor cover.
Screw in the spark plugs and connect the spark plug wires.
Connect the ground wire to the battery.
Start and warm up the engine.
Adjust the ignition timing and check the closing angle with the engine running (see section "Checking and adjusting the ignition timing").
Tighten the distributor mounting bolt.
Disconnect the measuring instruments, connect the vacuum hoses. If there is a double membrane, the black hose is connected to the thinner nipple (to set earlier ignition), and a white or white-black hose to a thicker fitting (to set a later ignition timing). On vehicles with automatic transmission, the thicker nipple for setting the late ignition timing remains free.
On a six-cylinder engine, install an air filter housing with an air flow meter, see section "Removal and installation the cylinder head".
Place the protective cap on the ignition distributor and snap it into place.
Connect the ground wire.
