Withdrawal
Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
Four cylinder engine
Remove the protective cap from the ignition distributor. Disconnect ground wire first.
Table. Ignition timing / CO content / Engine idle speed
Vehicles with catalytic converter
Remove the cover of the ignition distributor -1-, to do this, use a screwdriver to release 2 retaining clips -2- on the sides of the distributor.
Unplug connector -3- for pulse sender.
Six-cylinder engine
Remove air filter housing with air mass meter.
Remove the ignition distributor cover by pressing the 2 locking screws with a screwdriver and turning them ¼ turn to the left.
Disconnect ground wire.
Remove wires from spark plugs and remove spark plugs.
Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the vacuum diaphragm
Set the engine to the TDC position of the 1st cylinder. To do this, install the gearbox in neutral and turn the engine with a 27/30 mm wrench on the central bolt of the crankshaft pulley in the direction of engine rotation (clockwise) until the mark on the contact tongue of the ignition distributor slider coincides with the risk on the distributor housing; if necessary, raise the boot.
At the same time, the arrow -E- on the timing case cover must align with the top dead center mark -F- on the crankshaft pulley.
Loosen the coupling bolt -4- of the ignition distributor (drawing W-1203).
Remove the ignition distributor while turning it slightly.
Attention: In this case, the retaining clips -2- (drawing W-1203) must not block the pulse sensor disk, otherwise the disk may rotate relative to the hub.
On a six-cylinder engine, unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the ignition distributor.
Caution: Do not crank the engine with the ignition distributor removed.
Installation
Before installing, check the position of the engine at the top dead center of the 1st cylinder.
Turn the ignition distributor shaft so that the marks on its slider and housing coincide. Then turn the shaft approx. 30°against the direction of rotation of the ignition distributor. Working direction of rotation is clockwise.
Insert the ignition distributor. On a six-cylinder engine, when installing, turn the distributor slightly so that the oil pump drive engages.
Check whether the contact of the ignition distributor slider is above the risk on the distributor housing, otherwise pull out and insert the ignition distributor again.
Tighten the mounting bolts. Tightening torque on a four-cylinder engine: 10 Nm, on a six-cylinder engine: 20 Nm.
Connect the pulse sensor connector.
Clean the inside of the distributor cap (see section «Check of a cover of the distributor of ignition»).
Put on the cover. In this case, the protrusion of the cover must enter the recess in the housing of the ignition distributor. Turn the cover in both directions to check that it is installed correctly. Attach the distributor cap.
Screw in the spark plugs and connect the ignition wires.
Connect ground wire to battery.
Start and warm up the engine.
Adjust the ignition timing and check the closing angle with the engine running (see section «Checking and adjusting the ignition timing»).
Tighten the distributor bolt.
Disconnect gauges, connect vacuum hoses. With a double diaphragm, the black hose is connected to a thinner fitting (for setting an earlier ignition), and a white or white-black hose to a thicker fitting (to install a later ignition). On vehicles with automatic transmission, the thicker late ignition fitting remains free.
On a six-cylinder engine, install the air filter housing with an air mass meter, see section «Removal and installation of a head of cylinders».
Put the protective cap on the ignition distributor and snap it into place.
Connect ground wire.
