1. Peel back the boot at the base of the parking brake lever and loosen the parking brake cable adjustment nut, which also holds the cable to the brake lever (both are indicated by arrows). There are two cables - one for each rear wheel - and nuts for each cable. On some models, the entire center console must be removed to gain access to these nuts.
2. Jack up the vehicle and place it securely on axle stands.
3. Remove the drum (see Section Replacement of shoes of drums of brake mechanisms) or disk (see Section Inspection, removal and installation of the brake disc) rear brake mechanism.
4. On models with rear drum brakes, unhook the parking brake cable from the lever on the rear brake shoe (see Section Replacement of shoes of drums of brake mechanisms). On models with rear disc brakes, remove the parking brake shoes and actuator (see Section Check of a condition, removal and installation of assembly of a parking brake) and unhook the parking brake cable from the actuator. To do this, pull the outer cam and disconnect it from the inner cam
...then pull out the pin holding the cable on the inner cam and remove the inner cam
5. On models with rear drum brakes, pull out the cable and its sheath from the back of the brake shield, then release the cable sheath from the clips on the back of the trailing arm (it is easier to pull out the old cable and insert a new one with a straightened sheath than with a twisted one). On models with rear disc brakes, it is not necessary to remove the cable sheath from the brake shield, but for convenience, it is better to release it from the clamps and guides to reduce its kinks.
6. Pull the cable out of the sheath on the wheel side.
7. Lubricate the new cable with multipurpose grease, then insert it into the sheath and push it through so that its end comes out at the parking brake lever.
8. Pass the cable sheath through the brake shield and attach the rear end of the cable to the parking brake lever (for models with rear drum brakes) or to the actuator (for models with rear disc brakes). Make sure that you do not twist the cable while connecting it.
9. Install the cable sheath back into the clips on the back of the trailing arm.
10. On models with rear drum brakes, install the brake shoes and drum (see Section Replacement of shoes of drums of brake mechanisms). On models with rear disc brakes, install the parking brake shoes and actuator (see Section Check of a condition, removal and installation of assembly of a parking brake), as well as the rear brake disc (see Section Inspection, removal and installation of the brake disc).
11. Lower the vehicle to the ground and install the adjusting nut on the parking brake lever. Adjust parking brake cable (see Section Parking brake adjustment) and install the brake lever boot.
