4 - Air filter
Checking work
1. With the engine off, depress the brake pedal several times until its stroke stabilizes.
2. Depress and hold the pedal, then start the engine. If the pedal is slightly lowered, then everything is fine.
Leak test
1. Start the engine, and after one or two minutes, turn it off. Slowly depress the brake pedal several times. If for the first time the pedal goes far down, and then, with the second and third pressing, it gradually rises, then the vacuum booster is tight.
2. Depress a brake pedal at the working engine, then stop the engine, without releasing a pedal. If, after holding the pedal in the depressed position for 30 seconds, its stroke has not changed, then the vacuum booster is tight.
Removal and installation
1. Removing the vacuum booster requires special tools and cannot be done by a home mechanic. If the problem continues to bother you, it is recommended to replace the entire unit.
2. Remove the main cylinder as described in Section Removal and installation of the main brake cylinder.
3. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the vacuum brake booster.
4. Working in the passenger compartment, remove the glove box and lower the trim panels on the left side.
5. Remove the yoke and yoke pin to disengage the push rod from the cross shaft arm (for right hand drive models) or brake pedal (for left hand drive models). On left-hand drive models, also disconnect the brake pedal return spring.
6. Give four fixing nuts and take the block of the vacuum amplifier from an impellent compartment.
7. Examine the small filter inside the protective cover on the pusher. If it is clogged, it may affect the operation of the vacuum booster. To clean the filter, wash it in mild soapy water. If it still doesn't clear, replace it.
8. Installation repeats the removal procedure in reverse order. Tighten the fixing nuts of the vacuum brake booster with the required force. Before installing the protective cover on the booster air filter, make sure that the notches on the filter are located at 180 degrees to the notches on the shock absorber.
On right-hand drive models, the brake pedal is located on the right side of the vehicle and is connected to the left side by a cross shaft. Adjustment is made on the pushrod on the left side, but the specified size is measured on the pedal on the right side.
9. Adjust brake pedal height and brake light switch (see Section Brake pedal adjustment).
10. Install the master cylinder (see Section Removal and installation of the main brake cylinder) and attach the vacuum pump.
11. Carefully check up operation of brakes before the beginning of normal operation of the car.
