Running in a car (BMW 5 Series E28)
During the running-in period, it may happen that gear shifting, control, etc. are somewhat difficult at first. However, as a result of running-in, this phenomenon disappears after a while.
Please follow the following guidelines to ensure that your vehicle lasts as long as possible and is as economical as possible.
Up to 1000 km of mileage.
Drive with variable revs and variable speed, but do not exceed 140 km/h.
As a matter of principle, avoid maximum fuel delivery ("full throttle"), as well as excessive pressing of the accelerator pedal - the so-called "Kick-Down" position!
Starting from 100 km of mileage, you can gradually increase the revs and speed.
If during the operation of the vehicle one of these units is replaced with a new one, then the running-in instructions must be followed in this case as well.
During the running-in period, the grip of new tires on the road is not yet optimal, which is due to the technology of their manufacture. Therefore, during the first 300 km, a moderate driving style is recommended.
To achieve a uniform and optimal friction coefficient during the first 500 km, braking should be done mainly in the medium deceleration range. With new brake pad friction linings, repeated sharp braking should be avoided, especially at high speeds, or prolonged loads, such as when driving over mountain passes.
The friction linings of the brake pads and discs are optimally run in only after a run of 500 km and under the specified running-in conditions.
The parking brake is an independent system with separate brake drums, separate from the foot brake, and must also be run in.
If the braking efficiency is noticeably reduced, the driver can do the running-in himself. If the road, weather and traffic conditions allow it, tighten the parking brake lever slightly at a speed of approximately 40 km/h until resistance becomes noticeable. Then tighten the lever more firmly (move the sector up one tooth) and in this position move for about 400 m. Then release the lever completely again.
