Control and signal lamps (BMW 5 Series E39)

            0

The control and signal lamps marked with * light up for a while to check their functionality from the moment the ignition key is turned to position 2 and go out almost immediately after the engine starts.

Direction indicator, green

The lamp flashes when the direction indicators are turned on. When driving with a trailer, the lamp also flashes when the direction indicators on the trailer are turned on. Rapid flashing indicates a defect in the system.

High beam, blue

The lamp lights up when the high beam is on and the headlight signal is used. For details, refer to Section 13.

Parking brake, red *

The lamp lights up when the parking brake lever is applied. For details, refer to Section 6.

Brake fluid level/brake pad wear, red *

When the lamp lights up, it is necessary to check the brake fluid level or the condition of the brake pads if the brake fluid level has dropped below the norm (a message appears on the display of the automatic diagnostic system "Bremsflussigk prufen" or Brake pads are worn out (the message appears on the automatic diagnostic system display "Bremsbelag prufen").

Anti-lock braking system (ABS), yellow *

If the lamp lights up while driving, it is a signal that the ABS has been switched off due to a system malfunction. However, normal braking efficiency is maintained without restrictions. Contact a BMW service station for inspection. For details, contact Section 21.

Airbags, red *

The lamp's functionality is checked after turning the ignition key to position 1. If it does not light up or lights up while driving, please contact a BMW service station for inspection. For details, contact Section 4.

Tempostat, green

The lamp lights up when the system is on. The system can be controlled from the multifunction steering wheel. For details, refer to Section 9.

Please fasten your seat belt, red*

Depending on the vehicle's configuration, when the lamp lights up, a sound signal may be emitted simultaneously or a message may appear on the display of the automatic diagnostic system; depending on the vehicle's configuration, the lamp remains lit until the seat belt is fastened. For details on seat belts, please refer to the materials Section 4.

Automatic transmission, yellow *

Due to a malfunction of the automatic transmission, gear shifting is only possible using the emergency program. Please contact your nearest BMW service station. For details, contact section 8.

Level control, yellow *

If the indicator lamp lights up or a message appears on the automatic diagnostic system display "Niveauregel inaktiv", then this means that the ride height regulator is faulty.

Stop and inspect the vehicle. If the rear of the vehicle is significantly lower than the front, or if the vehicle is parked at an angle, (compare right rear and left rear), then contact the nearest BMW service station. Proceed with caution.

ASC+T Automatic stability control with traction control, yellow *

The system has been switched off by pressing a key or due to a malfunction. If a malfunction occurs, please contact a BMW service center. For details, please contact Section 11.

Fog lights, green

The lamp lights up when the fog lights are on. For details, refer to Section 13.

Rear fog lights, yellow

The lamp lights up when the rear fog lights are on. For details, refer to Section 13.

Engine oil level, yellow

When the light comes on, check the oil level. For details, refer to Chapter 1.

Low battery, red *

The lamp lights up as a signal that the battery is not charging. The reason may be a defect in the V-belt in the generator drive or a fault in the charging current circuit in the generator.

Driving cannot be continued, as there is a risk of engine damage due to overheating. If the V-belt is defective, the force that must be applied to the steering wheel increases when driving.

Engine oil pressure, red *

If the lamp lights up while the vehicle is moving and a message appears at the same time "Stop! Oldruck Motor" (Stop! Engine oil pressure) on the display of the automatic diagnostic system (if the car is equipped with this system). then you should immediately stop, turn off the engine, check the oil level and, if necessary, bring it up to normal. If the level is normal, then contact a BMW service station for advice.

Continued driving is not possible due to the risk of engine damage due to insufficient lubrication.

Glow plug preheater, yellow *

The engine can be started only after the lamp goes out. For details, refer to Section 5. If the DDE warning light comes on while driving or the message appears on the automatic diagnostic display "Einspritzaniage", then this means that there is a malfunction in the electronic injection system. If the engine does not stall, then you can continue driving, since the engine will be controlled by the emergency program. However, the power will be reduced. Therefore, repair the injection system at the first opportunity.
