Withdrawal
Remove caliper disc wheel brake and hang it on a wire to the body.
Attention: Do not disconnect the brake hose, otherwise the brake system will need to be bled during installation.
Unclip the ABS and brake pad wear sensor wires from the holder and disconnect from the plug.
Release the fastening of the pressure rod at the stabilizer, while holding the ball joint pin by the flats with an open-ended wrench.
Remove tie rod joint from a swivel base.
Check whether the mark -1- applied at the factory is visible for the subsequent installation of the spring strut. Otherwise, apply paint on the rack line -2-, which is a continuation of the gap in the swivel bearing.
Support the suspension strut from below with a garage jack to prevent it from falling down after releasing the top mount.
Unscrew the nut of the lower suspension strut mounting, remove the mounting bolt.
Unclip the swivel bearing slot and lock in the unclenched position. At the service station, a special tool BMW-31-2-200 is used for this.
Remove cover from shock strut dome.
If equipped, disconnect the electronic damper control connector and remove the wire cover.
Remove 3 securing nuts -arrows- at spring strut dome.
Tilt the swivel bearing using lever -1-, e.g. socket extension, until the suspension strut comes out of the wheel arch.
Attention: An assistant is required for this operation. Make sure that the wheel arch is not damaged. Close the wing with a protective cover -2-. If necessary remove lower engine cover.
Using a large screwdriver or a pry bar, pry the suspension strut out of the swivel bearing.
Attention: When squeezing out the suspension strut around the axis, do not turn it. When turning, radial notches can occur, which render the suspension strut unusable.
Installation
Insert the suspension strut into the swivel bearing so that the mounting mark is aligned with the slot of the swivel bearing.
Carefully guide the suspension strut into the wheel housing and tighten the dome mounting nuts to 20 Nm.
If present, connect the electronic damper control connector and insert the cable cover.
Install the cover on the suspension strut dome.
Using a garage jack, press the swivel support all the way up. At the same time, ensure the correct position of the mounting mark.
Insert the fastening bolt, screw on a new self-locking nut and tighten it to 80 Nm.
Connect to swivel tie rod end.
Set the wheels of the vehicle to a straight ahead position.
Screw on the stabilizer link with a new self-locking nut and tighten the nut to 60 Nm.
Connect the wires of the ABS and the brake pad wear sensor to the connector block and fix in the holder.
Install caliper disc wheel brake.
