Removal and installation the shock absorber strut (BMW 5 Series E39)

Removal

Remove the caliper disc wheel brake mechanism and hang it on a wire from the body.

Caution: Do not disconnect the brake hose, otherwise it will be necessary to bleed air from the brake system during installation.

Unfasten the ABS and brake pad wear sensor wires from the holder and disconnect them from the connector block.



Release the fastening of the pressure rod at the stabilizer, while holding the ball joint pin by the flats with an open-end wrench.

Remove the steering rod joint from a swivel support.



Check whether the factory mark "1" is visible for subsequent installation of the shock absorber strut. Otherwise, paint line "2" on the strut, which is a continuation of the gap in the pivot support.



Support the shock absorber strut from below with a garage jack to prevent it from falling down after releasing the upper mount.



Unscrew the nut of the lower shock absorber mount and remove the mounting bolt.

The swivel support spline is loosened and fixed in the loosened position. The service station uses a special device for this purpose, BMW-31-2-200.



Remove the cover from the shock absorber dome.

If equipped, disconnect the electronic shock absorber control system connector and remove the wire cover.

Unscrew the 3 nuts securing the "arrow" to the shock absorber strut dome.



Using lever "1", such as a socket extension, tilt the pivot support until the shock absorber comes out of the wheel well.

Caution: An assistant is required to perform this operation. Make sure that the wheel arch is not damaged. Cover the wing with the protective cover "2". If necessary remove the lower engine compartment cover.

Using a large screwdriver or pry bar, press the shock absorber strut out of the pivot bearing.

Caution: When squeezing the shock absorber strut around the axis, do not rotate it. When rotating, radial nicks may appear, which will make the shock absorber strut unusable.

Installation

Insert the shock absorber strut into the pivot support so that the mounting mark coincides with the slot of the pivot support.

Carefully insert the shock absorber strut into the wheel well and tighten the dome mounting nuts to a torque of 20 Nm.

If equipped, connect the electronic shock absorber control plug and insert the wire cover.

Install the cover on the shock absorber dome.

Using a garage jack, press the pivot support all the way up, ensuring that the mounting mark is positioned correctly.

Insert the mounting bolt, screw on a new self-locking nut and tighten it to a torque of 80 Nm.

Connect to the swivel support tie rod end.



Set the car wheels to the straight-ahead position.

Attach the stabilizer push rod with a new self-locking nut and tighten the nut to a torque of 60 Nm.

Connect the ABS and brake pad wear sensor wires to the connector block and secure them in the holder.

Install the caliper disc wheel brake mechanism.
