Flywheel — design description (BMW X5 E53)

            0

The flywheel of the power unit with automatic transmission is the drive disk (fig. 3.11.a) with a toothed ring for the starter and the mass of the torque converter of the automatic transmission or a dual-mass flywheel with a manual transmission (fig. 3.11.b), the disk is attached to the crankshaft flange with eight bolts (M12x1.5).

1 - bearing; 2, 11 - centering sleeve (∅ 14.5); 3 - pin; 4 - bolt (M12x1.5x50); 5 - flywheel; 6 -…

1 - bearing; 2, 11 - centering sleeve (∅ 14.5); 3 - pin; 4 - bolt (M12x1.5x50); 5 - flywheel; 6 - bolt (M12x1.5x28); 7 - slave disk; 8 - spacer washer; 9 - toothed crown; 10 - bolt (M10x17.5)

After removing the flywheel, replace its mounting bolts with new ones, after applying a locking compound to their threaded part. Thanks to the presence of a centering sleeve (diameter 14.5 mm) the flywheel is installed in only one position. Before pressing onto the flywheel (drive disk), the toothed ring under the starter is heated to a temperature of 220-250°C.

Tighten the flywheel mounting bolts in two steps:
  • 1st: torque 113 Nm (11.3 kgf·m);
  • 2nd: turn 90°.

The permissible flywheel runout for all engine models, when measured along the outer circumference, is no more than 0.20 mm, axial runout is no more than 0.30 mm.
