The D-VANOS system is designed to change the engine valve timing depending on the engine crankshaft speed and its load, by changing the angular position of the camshafts (Fig. 3.14).

The camshaft is rotated by opening the electromagnetic valve (EMV) and supplying oil to the actuator of the drive of one or another camshaft. This allows for optimal valve opening times in relation to idle speed, torque characteristics and fuel consumption. The DME ECU-KSUD controls the oil supply to the actuator by engaging the EMV.

The design of the D-VANOS system drive mechanism is shown in Fig. 3.15.
