Lubrication system — design description (BMW X5 E53)

            0

The engine lubrication system is combined - under pressure and spraying in the form of oil mist. All-season oil of viscosity class according to SAE from 15W-40 to 5W-20 is used on all gasoline engines, depending on the climatic conditions of the vehicle operation and only quality class according to ACE A.

Short-term use of CCMC-G4, CCMC-G5 or API-SH, API-SH/CD or API-SH/CE oils is permitted, according to the "API" system (American Petroleum Institute) adopted in the USA. The European Commission CCMC was replaced by "ACEA" (Association des Constructeurs Europeems die l'Automobile). The car manufacturer has set its own standards for oil use, so for reliable operation of the engine it is necessary to use oils of ACEA quality specification.

Attention! The company "BMW-AG" does not allow the introduction of additional additives of any kind into fuels and oils intended for the engines of its cars.

The main components of the lubrication system are shown in Fig. 3.16.

1 - replaceable element; 2 - ring (7.0x2.5); 3 - ring (91x4); 4 - filter cover; 5 - sealing gasket; 6 - oil pipeline; 7 - sealing ring (A14x20); 8 - hollow bolt; 9 - bolt (M8x100); 10 - oil temperature sensor; 11 - oil pressure sensor; 12 - bolt (M8x55); 13 - bolt (148x70); 14 - ring (20x3); 15 - suction pipe; 16 - bolt (M6x16); 17.45 - bolt (M8x55); 18 - oil pump; 19 - bushing; 20 - feeler gauge; 21 - ring (9x2.2); 22 - bracket; 23, 25, 27, 28, 34 - bolt; 24 - guide; 26 - ring (19.5x3); 29 - oil pan; 30 - pin (M6x30); 31, 35 - sealing ring; 32-oil level sensor; 33 - nut (M6); 36 - plug (M12x1.5); 37 - sealing gasket; 38 - mounting ring; 39 - nut (M10x1); 40 - asterisk; 41 - internal rotor; 42 - outer rotor; 43 - chain; 44 - control valve; 46 - spring; 47 - ring (17x1.8); 48 - spacer sleeve; 49 - retaining ring (2x1); 50 - oil separator hose branch pipe; 51 - oil filter housing

The car models are equipped with an oil control system, which includes — pressure, temperature and oil level, depending on the engine crankshaft speed (load). The oil pressure in idle mode on a warm engine should be at least 0.5 kgf/cm². If the crankshaft speed is higher than or equal to the idle speed, and the pressure is lower than 0.5 kgf/cm², the emergency oil pressure indicator flashes on the instrument panel. At an engine speed of about 5000-6000 min⁻¹, the oil pressure should be within 4.0-4.2 kgf/cm².

The main reasons for the indicator to blink may be:
  • low oil level:
  • pressure sensor failure;
  • temperature sensor failure;
  • level sensor failure;
  • oil pump drive failure;
  • oil pump failure;
  • increased wear of crankshaft bearings.

Engine lubrication system capacity (including 0.5 l in the oil filter) — 7.5 l. Oil is poured into the engine oil pan through the plug on the cylinder head cover.
