Replacing the hydraulic timing chain tensioner (BMW X5 E53)

Warning! The timing chain tensioner plunger is under spring pressure. When removing the locking pins, there is a risk of injury due to it flying out.


The replacement of the hydraulic timing chain tensioner must be carried out in the following order. Prepare the device "11.3.340". Remove the engine and the front timing chain cover.

Press the bar (1, Fig. 6.54) tensioner in the direction indicated by the arrow and insert the "11.3.340" device into the chain tensioner (3). Loosen the bolts (2) and remove the timing chain tensioner (3).
